Willy Caslon is a contemporary serif typeface that reinterprets the English tradition associated with William Caslon, adapting it to modern reading rhythms. The project proposes a meeting point between the historical legacy of transitional roman typefaces and Latinotype's editorial vision.
Its design begins with a moderate modulation and a slightly slanted axis, characteristic of classic Caslon, but introduces greater formal control that intensifies and revitalizes its structures. The sharp terminals are among its most recognizable features, visible in both the serifs and letters such as a, c, and r. The curves narrow and concentrate, especially in the counters of the a and g and in the shoulder of the n, generating a more active rhythm within the text.
The contrast intensifies at the ends of the strokes, reinforcing the typographic presence without affecting readability. The proportions are designed for both print and digital editorial contexts, with a balanced x-height and consistent ascender-descender relationships. The italic typeface has its own construction, and the uppercase letters have been specifically designed to integrate with the system, maintaining consistency in weight and typographic color.
Willy Caslon retains a clear connection to Caslon's classic spirit but translates it into contemporary use, where legibility, rhythm, and character are central criteria. Alexis Navarro:
Graphic Designer. Graduated from DuocUC and Diploma in Typography Design from Catholic University (Chile) in 2018. He has collaborated as a Typeface Designer at W Type Foundry, CTCh Foundry, Sudaca Type Studio and FutureFonts. He is currently a Typeface Designer at Latinotype Foundry.
César Araya:
Designer in Visual Communication and Bachelor of Arts and Sciences of Visual Communication UTEM, Diploma in Digital Typography from the University of Chile. He is the co-creator of the mini-documentary project "Chile Tipográfico". Collaborating typographer of the "Biblioteca" project, which provides the National Library of Chile with its own typography for internal and external communication, and was also selected in Tipos Latinos 2016. Since 2015, he has worked as Typeface Designer at Latinotype and professor of the Typography I and II lectures, of the UTEM.
Daniel Hernández:
Graphic Designer. Design Graduate of Universidad Mayor in 2006, and with a Diploma Course in Typography from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in 2007. He has exposed and presented his work in different typographic Biennials and exhibitions. His a Co-founder of Latinotype Foundry and Font Catalogue.
Felipe Sanzana:
Felipe Sanzana is a graphic designer and typographer. His work has been selected at the Ibero-American Design Biennial and at the Tipos Latinos Biennial both in the category of fonts for texts and of non-alphabetic systems. He works currently at Latinotype in the production and design of digital fonts.
Franco Jonas:
Franco Jonas Hernández has a degree in Visual Communication Design at Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana del Estado de Chile & Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UTEM - UNAM) (2019). Diploma in Typography, Digital TypeDesign at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (2015).
Juan Bruce:
Juan Bruce is a Chilean typographer and researcher. His passion for typography began after completing the Master's Degree in Typography Design at the University of Reading. Since receiving the degree in 2015 he has worked for companies such as Google, Monotype and Type Together, focusing his work on the design of Latin and Bengali typefaces, as well as research into the extinct Khojki alphabet and its typographic history.
