True to its Greek name (αβέρτα), meaning to speak openly and directly, Averta was designed by Kostas Bartsokas to communicate with clarity, warmth, and quiet confidence. Rooted in the tradition of early twentieth-century constructed grotesques, its monolinear geometry is softened by open apertures and carefully considered alternates, giving the typeface both precision and personality. With Version 2, Averta has been systematically refined and expanded. Spacing and kerning have been reworked, letterforms subtly rebalanced, and the family extended to perform more reliably across complex typographic systems.
The five middle weights remain optimised for small-size legibility through careful control where curves transition into stems, while the lightest and heaviest weights assert a confident presence in headlines. In contrast to the geometric uprights, the italics introduce a gentle humanist touch, adding further versatility. Averta's range now includes optically adjusted Narrow and Condensed widths designed for tight headlines and compact layouts without distortion. All widths and weights are available within a single Variable Font file, making the family flexible and easy to deploy across editorial, identity, interface, and signage systems. Rich OpenType features, small caps, extensive figure sets, and alternate glyphs support detailed typographic work, while its multi-script coverage unifies Latin, Greek, Vietnamese, and award-winning Cyrillic, including localised forms for Bulgarian, Macedonian, Russian, and Serbian.
